How do Traktor stems work?
Traktor stems divide a track into four controllable musical parts. When a compatible Stem file is loaded into a Stem Deck, a DJ can adjust or mute parts such as drums, bass, vocals, and other instrumentation independently.
From a stereo mix to four components
A finished song normally reaches the DJ as one stereo mix. Stem separation estimates the musical sources inside that mix and creates four components. TraktorStems uses the practical categories drums, bass, vocals, and other or melody.
The process does not recover original studio session tracks. Instruments often overlap in frequency and time, so separation quality varies by source. A sparse arrangement can separate differently from a dense, heavily limited master.
What can a DJ do with stems?
Build cleaner transitions
Reduce or remove the outgoing track's vocals while retaining rhythm, or introduce a new bass line without stacking two full mixes.
Create live mashups
Combine a vocal from one track with drums and musical material from another, subject to musical fit and your right to use the recordings.
Apply focused effects
Send an effect to one part instead of processing the full track, helping an echo, filter, or performance gesture stay more controlled.
Rebalance a track
Adjust the contribution of drums, bass, vocals, or other material for a particular transition or moment in the set.
Stem Decks and Remix Decks are not the same
A Stem Deck plays a multi-part Stem file and exposes controls for its components. A Remix Deck is designed around cells and samples. Some controllers can interact with both workflows, but the deck types and library behavior are distinct.
What file do I need?
TraktorStems provides a packaged .stem.m4a for compatible Traktor stem workflows. Learn what the file contains and review a practical import and playback checklist.
Can the processing happen online?
Yes. With TraktorStems, the upload happens in a browser and the separation runs remotely. You download the completed file rather than performing the stem-processing workload locally. See how to create Traktor stems online.
